ANNUAL REPORT TO THE NATION ON THE STATUS OF CANCER NOW AVAILABLE
The Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, jointly issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), shows that overall cancer mortality continues to decline and that prostate cancer mortality has stabilized. According to Felix Feng, MD, Chair of the NRG Oncology Genitourinary Committee, "The NCI notes that 'after two decades of decline between 1993 and 2013, prostate cancer mortality leveled off between 2013 and 2015.' This is likely due to less PSA screening, which occurred after the USPSTF gave PSA screening a 'D' recommendation. That has now been changed to a 'C,' but the uptake of PSA screening after the change is not yet clear. All investigators agree that PSA testing is imperfect and that screening can lead to overdiagnosis of indolent disease, but during the PSA era, the risk of being diagnosed with metastatic disease was lowered. Today there is hope that imaging with multiparametric MRI can lead to fewer prostate biopsies being performed, yet those that are performed using MRI guidance are more efficient in finding the higher grades of cancer that warrant treatment."
